Fête de l'escalade, feast day
An ancient tradition.
The Fête de l'escalade commemorates the city of Geneva's victory over the Savoyard troops who attacked on 12 December 1602. Children will dress up and sing, recounting the events of 1602 in ancient patois, while members of the "Company of 1602" will parade by on horseback, in period costume.
A high point of the weekend's events is the torchlight procession, with over 1000 costumed participants. Steaming soup awaits you opposite the Hôtel de Ville, which refers to Catherine Cheynel's action during the battle. Upon hearing the battle which ensued beneath her windows, she tipped her cauldron of soup over a Savoyard soldier. On the evening of 12 December, the people of Geneva will celebrate with a saucepan of chocolate filled with marzipan vegetables. According to custom, the oldest and youngest at the table break the chocolate dish between them, before everyone can take a piece.
